International Women's Day

- Wednesday, March 02, 2016

"She made broken look beautiful and strong look invincible.

She walked with the universe on her shoulders and made it look like wings."

Ariana Dancu

This week we celebrated International Women's Day, a day promoting respect, appreciation and love towards women as well as a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.

This year's campaign is the #PledgeforParity, asking men and women to "take a concrete step to help achieve gender parity more quickly". It takes a matter of minutes to help, pledging to:

    • help women and girls achieve their ambitions
    • challenge conscious and unconscious bias
    • call for gender-balanced leadership
    • value women and men's contributions equally
    • create inclusive, flexible cultures
Small changes in your everyday life can make a huge difference to women and girls struggling in your local community. Taking time out of your day to promote these issues can help to achieve gender parity more quickly.

Women and Mental Health

Although mental health problems effect men and women equally, there are some issues that are more common amongst women.

Differing social factors mean that women are put at a greater risk of poor mental health than men.

  • 29% of women are treated for a mental health problem
  • Post-natal depression can affect between 8% and 15% of women after they give birth
  • Women are twice as likely to to experience anxiety disorders than men
  • Phobias affect 22 in 1,000 women in the UK
  • 1.9% of women experience anorexia in any year
  • Between 0.5% and 1% of young women experience bulimia at any one time
